Lost Highway

I have only one word to sum up this entire flick: NUTS...Do yourself a favor and don't go and do something stupid like watching this movie on acid...Mess you up good... Whoever compiled the soundtrack was an extremely smart individual...It's full of the kind of stuff today's youth just eats right up: Nine Inch Nails, Marilyn Manson, Smashing Pumpkins, David Bowie...It's a decent soundtrack, but aside from that, it's the main reason people are watching the movie. Even I myself heard the soundtrack before watching the actual film, and I don't even know how to begin to describe it...Oh, well, I'll try, but don't expect it to be comprehensive or anything ;) |

Fred Madison (played by Bill Pullman) is accused of murdering his wife (Patricia Arquette) and is even filmed doing so, but he has no recollection whatsoever of committing the act. He is sent to death row for his crime, and while there, he goes through some sort of strange paranormal phenomena (he had experienced it only a few months before) and somehow changes into a young man (Balthazar Getty) who leads a completely different life. The man is released (how can they keep an innocent man on death row, even though they have no idea how he got there?) and he tries to go back to his life...But strange things start happening to him too. He meets several people that Fred had known, and a woman he comes in contact with (I'd try to explain it, but it just can't be explained) leads him through a web of complete insanity. |
| On a beach out in a remote part of the desert, the young man suddenly changes back into Fred (but still seems to have the mind of the young man), he kills some people, and then goes back and tells "himself" that so and so is dead...This is also the opening scene of the movie, but you just don't see who's bringing the message that the guy had been killed... | ![]() |

Anyway, the cops catch up with Fred/the boy, and Fred is chased by them up a highway...He starts to go into one of his weird trances, and the highway flips out, thus letting the viewer know that something screwy is going down in Fred's head...And that's all I can really say...Literally...Just when you think you're starting to understand it, and that soon you'll have a rational explanation for all that is going on (or at least some kind of explanation, nevermind rational) everything changes, more twists are thrown into the plot, and all you can do is hold your head and keep watching in agony... |
I may sound like I'm trashing the movie, but such is not the case. It was an extremely gripping flick, and the cinematography was amazing, but it will frustrate the hell out of you. Oh, and it has a VERY slow start...If you can get past it (trust me, it's long) you're in for quite a ride.
