Ever feel like you didn't fit in? For shy, young Carrie White (Sissy Spacek) it was the horrible story of her life. Carrie's mother, Margaret (played by Piper Laurie) was known around town for being an eccentric religious fanatic, and Carrie lived in a world of Crucifixes, candles and statues of religious entities. Brought up to believe that anything in life that might make her feel pleasure was sinful, and that the simple act of becoming a woman branded her dirty and a whore. She was forced to endure a painful life of heckling from her peers, especially the high school beauty queens in her Phys Ed. class. |
| If it weren't for the guilt-laden heart of one of her
classmates, Sue Snell (Amy Irving), Carrie might not have had the chance to experience
even the simplest of teenage pleasures: the senior prom. Plagued by her conscience after a
horrendous scene in the girls locker room in which Carrie was completely stripped of her
dignity, Sue talked her boyfriend Tommy (William Katt) to take Carrie to the prom, just
one night of magic that might help erase all the terrible things she had lived through.
Despite her mother's pleading, Carrie accepted Tommy's invitation hesitantly. In a pink satin dress she had made herself just for the occasion, Carrie shocked onlookers by actually appearing to be the normal teenage girl they were all so |

convinced she wasn't. Gradually, Carrie let herself relax in
her surroundings, allowing herself for possibly the first time ever to enjoy herself. Also
for the first time, she was told that she looked beautiful. Unfortunately, unbeknownst to
Carrie, Chris Hargenson (played by Nancy Allen) had been plotting with her boyfriend and
several others to make sure that the senior prom was the worst night of Carrie's life.
Chris had been banned from the prom herself after being caught tormenting Carrie, and now
she was bent on revenge. The traditional voting on the Prom King & Queen had been rigged in order to ensure that Carrie White took center stage, directly beneath the huge drum of pigs blood that sat waiting for someone to pull the cord. That someone happened to be Chris and her boyfriend (played to the cheeseball max by John Travolta) who were hiding under the stage. How could Chris have known that she was about to awaken the incredible and mysterious powers possessed by the girl she hated so much? |
| After first noticing her strange ability to make things move or shatter
using sheer will, Carrie began looking into the scientific phenomena of telekinesis. Her
mother tried to convince her that science had nothing to do with her powers, and that it
was the devil's work that was moving objects around, not her mind. In her heart, however,
Carrie looked upon her ability as a 'gift', never guessing that one night this gift would
bring about destruction in it's purest form. More than anything, Stephen King's masterpiece Carrie is a tale of how cruel the human spirit can be. Manipulated and abused by her mother, and for the most part forgotten by the rest of society, Carrie dwelled in the most terrible of worlds: a world where she was alone, frightened, and convinced that nobody could ever love her. Fortunately, however, Carrie is also a story of revenge, which as human beings, we somehow need to see in order to feel comfortable. There isn't a person alive that wasn't grinning as Carrie "stuck it to" the entire gymnasium filled with her peers. Yet, sadly, this revenge came at a horrendous price. Perhaps if all the trendy, popular kids were forced to sit down and watch this movie ad nauseum, there would be no such thing as the kid who never gets invited to other children's' birthday parties. |
