Melvin was a geek with a capitol "Get the Hell away from me, you GEEK!". He lived his life in monotonous geek-dome, mopping up sweat and spills at the local health club. Fed up with the constant annoyance of Melvin, Bozo and his entourage of hooligans devise a plan in which Melvin will be embarrassed beyond belief, hoping this will force him to quit his job and go running home to mommy with his tail between his legs. Perhaps if they had set their plan to action on any other day, it might have turned out more along the lines of what they had intended. |
| Bozo's girlfriend Julie uses her good looks to coax Melvin into doing something he ordinarily wouldn't in having him dress up in a ridiculous pink tutu and tights. Although Melvin felt silly in the getup, he was motivated by the promises of sexual favors Julie made to him. Suffice to say, for a guy like Melvin, these kinds of promises don't come along very often, so he did as she bade him. After making his way to the pool where he had been instructed to meet the illustrious Julie, he realizes the entire room is in darkness. Groping around in the darkness for what he was promised, Melvin comes across something warm and soft...Julie! He unloads all his affections on the form in the dark only to be suddenly interrupted by the lights coming on and the realization that Julie wasn't at his side at all...It was a sheep! All decked out in garter belts and all! |

Melvin quickly flees the scene, humiliated, while the entire population of the health club follows behind, laughing and jeering. Suddenly: a window, a fall, a truck carrying toxic waste??!! Melvin falls kerplunk into the chemicals. Laughter amid the crowd quickly turns to panic as Melvin begins smoking, and screaming, and finally catches on fire and takes off up the street. When he makes it home, he is just in time to discover that he is changing. Not only becoming disfigured by the chemical burns, but mutating somehow into a huge, bulking, hero-type figure so very unlike what he had been only minutes before. Afraid and ashamed of his startling new appearance, Melvin (now referred to as "Toxie") heads off on his own. |
| Up until this point, the film bears no real markings of a
"genre-specific" film. Many would call it a Horror film with a 'twist' or
perhaps even a comedy. However, The Toxic Avenger soon morphs into
somewhat of a Hero/Action-Adventure film as Toxie begins to discover that his new image,
along with his new strength, can go a long way in promoting 'good' in his community. He
smashes swindlers, bashes burglars and clobbers crooks, all the while finding time for a
little romance on the side. Brought to us by Troma Films, The Toxic Avenger has become somewhat of a cult classic. Not readily available at your friendly neighborhood 'mom & pop' video store, it is definitely worth the searching you may have to do to find it. It's peculiar (yet incredibly satisfying) blend of humor, gore, horror, and reality make it the perfect movie to watch on a Friday night when you should have something better to do than watch movies, but you just plain old don't.
