Evil Dead 2: Dead by Dawn

In this second installment in the overwhelmingly popular Evil
Dead Trilogy, much of the plot takes after it's predecessor in terms of the
things poor Ash encounters in a run-down cabin out in the woods. Many people have the
mistaken impression that Evil Dead 2 is a continuation of the first film,
but in fact it's more of a retelling of the chilling story. Ash, the only survivor from the first film, decides to try his hand at the cabin in the woods once again. He brings along his girlfriend, Linda (obviously not the Linda that bought the farm the first time) for a romantic weekend away from the city. Coincidentally enough, Ash finds a tape recorder which contains the mysteries of the Necronomicon (is this Deja Vu or what?). |
| What gives us a clue that this is not a sequel in the traditional sense of the word is that Ash plays the tape and therefore unlocks the gateway between living and dead. Within no time at all, he is once again faced with a dauntingly "giggly" girlfriend. Of course in this film, Ash doesn't waste any time in taking care of business. He doesn't wait around like a sissy for the lion's share of the movie but instead goes right to work beheading the bitch when she comes after him, then buries her in the woods. Of course, it just wouldn't be fun if she stayed dead, or if that were the end of the night for that matter. There's plenty more "possessions" and hackings to keep us amused, not to mention Bruce Campbell's thoroughly enjoyable portrayal of Ash. |
| While Ash battles the evil all around him (and in him as the
case ends up being) some other travelers are embarking on a trip to the same cabin. A
young woman and her brother are in the midst of going to meet their parents who had rented
the cabin (the father being a scientist who had discovered the ancient Necronomicon and
was translating it's passages there). The two siblings, along with their hired guides are shocked to discover both their parents missing and a strange man lying in the cabin beside a bloody axe. They immediately assume that Ash had killed their parents and lock him up in the cellar. They soon come to realize through listening to their fathers recorded diaries that their mothers life had ended after she became possessed by the evil spirits which he had evoked by reciting the passages of the book. Soon faced with "possession" problems of their own, they free Ash from the cellar just in time for him to aid them in some serious ass kicking. |

Despite the fact that this movie carries a lot of
similarities of that of it's predecessor, it's also packed with a lot more
"dark" humor and a few extra twists not included in the first film. The most
substantial of these "twists" being that Ash is briefly overcome by the evil
spirits and momentarily is possessed by one of these spirits himself. But what kind of
movie would it be if Ash wasn't his usual tough as nails self? With a strong will and sexy
smirk he manages to pull himself back together and help fight off the terrible force that
plagues them. The ending of the movie leads directly into Army of Darkness, the third installment in the trilogy, where Ash gets sucked through the portal between the two harshly contrasting worlds and lands in medieval times where he is hailed as the man who was sent to save them from the Deadites. |
