The Amityville Horror

The spawn of the best selling novel by Jay Anson, The Amityville Horror: A True Story, this film drove audiences into theatres because of most everyone's love of a good scare. It just makes it that much better when the story is reportedly true. Starring Margot Kidder and James Brolin, The Amityville Horror does a good job sticking to the plot and layout of the book. Of course, in some places someone who had read the book first would have an advantage in knowing a little better what's going on, as some scenes depicted in the novel would have been simply too difficult to replicate considering how old the movie is and the technological limitations of that time.

The movie begins with a virtual bloodbath: a young man murders his entire family (parents and 4 brothers and sisters), shooting them all in the head while they slept. Once in police custody, the man claimed that he had heard voices that night telling him to do it. After the small town begins to pick up the pieces and get over what had just occurred, a new family moves into the home, the great deal they got on it overpowering their feelings of nervousness about moving into a house that had such a tragic and horrible history. George and Kathleen Lutz and their 3 children are all set to begin a new life in their dream house and at last, truly become a family (The Lutzes had both been previously married).

Soon after the Lutzes move in they begin to notice strange things happening around them: infestations of flies out of season, objects mysteriously being moved about the house, pictures even sometimes flying off the walls by themselves. The Lutzes overlook all of this for the time being, wanting nothing to spoil the euphoria they feel they have finally been able to acchieve. Nobody really seems to notice when George begins to change, to become short-tempered with Kathy and the children, nor does anyone pay much attention when the youngest child, Amy, begins spending more and more time with an imaginary friend named Jody whom she talks to in her bedroom at night.

Finally realizing that the occurances within their new home are too much to deal with blindly, George takes the initiative to look into the history of the house. He discovers that the house was built by a man driven out of Salem long ago for practicing witch craft. As it turned out, the house rested atop some sort of special place of power regarding sacrifice and devil worship. Upon inspection by a friend with knowledge of the Occult, the Lutzes learn that the centre of the "bad nature" of the house seems to be in the basement, in a hidden room covered in blood. Within the room lies the opening of a well, a well which is supposedly "the path to hell".

Regarding the actual Horror story in the Amityville house, not long after the book and the movie respectively sent the public into a frenzy it was revealed that the Lutzes had staged a clever hoax. Claiming that their house was haunted, or possessed, they stood to make a killing in book and movie contracts. Not only did their stories change throughout the course of the investigation, becoming more elaborate each time, but another family moved into the house after the Lutzes and report no strange happenings of unfortunate incidents whatsoever.
